Sailing at Milwaukee Yacht Club

Sailing on the waters of Lake Michigan can run the gamit of calm, light air days to full blown, wild ride sailing and everything in between.

The Milwaukee Yacht Club runs it's own schedule of races from April through September, using a fleet of boats considered to be one of the top race management fleets on the Great Lakes.   Sail_Fleet_Pager0768The Club has served as host to many of the most prestigious competitions in sailing, including the Finn Gold Cup, the Adams and Mallory Cups, the US SAIING Youth Championship Regatta, the Midget Ocean Racing Class International,  Soling Worlds, the Soling, Lightning, and J-24 North Amercian Regattas.  In 2009 MYC hosted the USODA Midwest Championship and in 2010 MYC is the site for the Laser National Championships.

Regatta participants, families and friends will find MYC as a friendly, family oriented club with first class facilities and top notch race services and leaders.

PHRF Racing at the Milwaukee Yacht Club

Boats in the “Performance Handicap Racing Fleet” or PHRF are offshore monohull or multihull sailboats that are assigned performance handicap ratings so that they can compete in casual and championship racing with dissimilar boats at Yacht Clubs on Lake Michigan. Milwaukee Yacht Club’s Fleet of PHRF boats range in length from 24’ to 68’. The boats race on Wednesday evenings and, in the Milwaukee Bay Offshore Series, on select Friday evenings, Saturdays, or Sundays. During the weekend regattas the Milwaukee Yacht Club fleet and the South Shore Yacht Club fleet race together.

The complete 2009 Racing Schedule is available for viewing on this website. Forty or more PHRF boats participate in racing on Milwaukee’s beautiful Milwaukee Bay. There are usually three divisions, PHRF 1, PHRF 2, and the “JAM” division which are boats that sail with a Jib and Main only. The Wednesday evening series begins in May, and ends in late August; the Milwaukee Bay Offshore Series, begins in June, and ends in late September. Post race food and beverages are served after each Wednesday night race, and social activities are held after several of the Milwaukee Bay Offshore events.

PHRF boats are generally crewed by between 5 and 12 sailors. Skippers are often looking for additional crew, and sailors are frequently looking for a boat to crew on.   Families sail aboard many PHRF boats, making this a great way to spend quality time together. PHRF racing can be a great way to introduce yourself to the competitive side of sailing, both as an owner and crew. If you would like to get involved, please contact Cindy Kraus This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Milwaukee Bay Laser Fleet (MBLF) is a coop Laser racing program lasers_pictures_from_google550supported by the Milwaukee Yacht Club, South Shore Yacht Club and the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center. Our Laser Fleet races on Tuesday nights from the end of May through August. Race committee duties are split between the three clubs with each club taking a one month stint at running the Laser races. All Tuesday night racing takes place on the inner harbor of the Milwaukee Bay.

The Milwaukee Yacht Club includes the MBLF, and other Laser sailors from the area, in the annual Milwaukee Yacht Club Grand Prix Regatta. This is a two day event and has developed a good following of Laser sailors from the Midwest region. There is a separate race course set for the Laser Fleet at this event. The Milwaukee Yacht Club also hosts other Laser events when asked. All weekend events are sailed outside of the Milwaukee break wall in Lake Michigan.

There are a series of trophies that are awarded by the MBLF. The most important trophy is the Milwaukee Bay Laser Fleet Perpetual Fleet Champion. This trophy is a Laser Half Model, donated by Harken Yacht Equipment. The perpetual trophy is awarded to the overall season series winner and is presented at the winner's home club's annual awards banquet. The trophy will remain in the winner's home club trophy case until a new champion is declared. There are also first, second and third place trophies presented for the overall season series winner. Additionally, there are monthly trophies presented by the host clubs for the first three place winners for these respective months.

The MBLF has been active for four years. We typically have 25 to 30 fleet members. Laser racing is very active in the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois region, which is known as District 20 by the International Laser Class Association - North American Region. There are events held in Chicago, several on the inland lakes, Green Bay and La Crosse. We are a very active class with talent levels from beginner though nationally competitive sailors. All are welcome here.

Picture1NEWIdeal_18The J24 is one of the largest classes of racing keelboats. MYC has had a fleet here for more than 25 years. Because the boats have been around so long, a competitive boat can be obtained for a very reasonable price. We race one design on Wednesday from mid May through the end of September. Often some of the boats finish less than one boat length apart.
Our races are open to J24's from MYC, South Shore YC, Community Sailing Center, and boats from other recognized sailing clubs. Contact Mike Aita if you are interested in racing with us.

The Soling Fleet is a group of dedicated racing sailors San_Diego_Solings_resized_37committed to fostering the tradition of one-design competition at MYC – and are determined to have fun while doing it!  If you are serious about racing there is no better way to hone your skills than in a Soling…

The Soling is a popular one design club racer with a class organization that provides opportunities for national and international competition. We are a training ground for young (and not so young) sailors who aspire to be great.  The class provides world-class competition within which the novice is able learn from the experienced.

The Soling Class is remarkable for its ability to maintain an enjoyable mixture of club and Olympic sailors throughout its racing programs. The majority of competitors at a typical World Championship enjoy going up against and frequently beating the best. By the same token most of the Olympic competitors are happy to contribute their skills and their knowledge to the enhancement of the local racing at their home clubs.

832_2010_Resized_Skelding3The Soling is a true three-person boat; all three crew are essential to success and inexperienced crews are quickly trained.  Many of its skippers are women as are many of its crews. In fact, the Soling has been the only gender-mixed class during our Olympic tenure.

Solings are raced in 41 countries on four continents. Club racing takes place at numerous venues in Canada, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, almost every country in Europe.  You can be a part of it right here in Milwaukee as well as many other great sailing venues across the United States including Annapolis, San Diego, Chicago and Seattle.

Please get in touch with us if you want to come out and race…
