Message from MYC Sailing School Director Catherine Hackbarth
Starting this summer, the MYC Sailing School is proud to premier a new, re-envisioned approach to youth sailing instruction. Following our goal of instilling a deep passion for the sport of sailing, our Beginner Program will now stretch from MONDAY through FRIDAY, from 8:30am-3:30pm. Classes will cover all the same points of sailing instruction and uphold MYC traditions, from tacking and jibing to the famous (or infamous) Great Watermelon Race. Our new program will offer a broader spectrum for children and a new experience on the lakefront. With the extended hours of education and fun, the Beginners will explore a wider range of sailing on every Friday of the week. These newly dubbed Fun Fridays will introduce our students to many aspects of our favorite sport, from multihulls to windsurfing, from family cruises to fieldtrips.
Our Sailing School experience does not stop there, however. We will also be running two levels of Racing Instruction to challenge our students on and off the water. On TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS, younger students will wet their appetite for racing in our Introduction to Racing class. Here, we will introduce and refine both tactics and technique when it comes to small boat, dinghy racing (Optis and 420’s, specifically). We will cover advanced boathandling, such as rolltacks, spinnakers, and trapezeing. Hand in hand with this level, we will also offer an advanced MYC Racing Team, where students will hone their technique and their tactics in more intense levels of competition on the water.
Our Adult Sailing will also expand this upcoming season. Following our ASA certification program instituted last summer, we will again be offering level 101 for Keelboat certification. However, for those who have already taken the basic level, we intend to provide even more levels, such ASA 103 for Basic Costal Cruising and ASA 104 for Bareboat Chartering. These courses will provide a further step for those adults who already have their skills as certified in the 101 course, and they will certainly prepare adult students for that long deserved chartered cruise in the BVI! This new vision begins Monday, June 18th, Join us for the sailing experience!
