2018 - A GREAT SEASON AHEAD!

Here's what's in store this summer.  Our Junior and Adult Sailing Programs are offered to members and the general public.
We encourage you to visit our club along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan and experience the great sport of sailing.

The 2018 Sailing School Brochure and Registration Forms are now available.

Below are Course Dates and Times for 2018.

BEGINNING SAILING (COURSE DESCRIPTION)

Our Beginner Class is perfect for ages 8-17 years, to learn how to sail with no experience needed.
Students will learn safety, sailing terminology, as well as basic on the water skill, such as points of sail, tacking, jibing, and docking. Students will also begin to learn the fundamentals of racing towards the end of our lessons. On the water time is combined with classroom learning, as well as team building activities on land.
For your child’s safety and comfort, they must know how to swim. Children are required to bring their own quality Personal Flotation Device (PFD) to be worn at all times. It is recommended they bring a change of clothing and windbreaker or fleece, sunscreen, water bottle and hat.
Your child should bring a bag lunch from home or you may purchase lunch at our Boathouse Grill which includes burgers, sandwiches, soft drinks and snacks. Inquire at the Clubhouse front desk if you would like a temporary membership set up for this purpose.

ACADEMY SAILING (COURSE DESCRIPTION)

BIC, 420 & LASER TEAMS

Our ‘Intermediate’ class is now called The Academy. This level is designed to emphasize all the essentials of boat handling on a focused racing platform. Students will need to specify registration for the Bic Academy, 420 Academy or Laser Academy depending on primary interest, age and experience. In this course, students will practice the necessary skills to become self-sufficient as a racer in our fleets, including the Olympic training boat and the Laser Radial. Students must bring or buy a lunch each full day of classes. It is very important that students dress for the weather, as we will sail in all safe weather conditions and wind speeds based on their skills. Suggested gear includes a pair of sailing gloves, dinghy boots, thermal clothing (such as Under Armor or fleece), a life jacket, and waterproof outer layer.

When registering, the desired fleet needs to be indicated. Ages 8-15 should register for Bic fleet. First time Academy students should register for the 420 fleet, unless they have previous Laser Radial or 4.7 racing experience. Students often repeat the Academy Level until all required skills are demonstrated. Students who demonstrate required skill in a certain fleet will then receive recommendation to advance to the racing team for that fleet.

RACING TEAM (COURSE DESCRIPTION)
BIC, 420 & LASER TEAMS

Our ‘Advanced’ class will now be referred to as our Racing Teams. Racing Team members will be expected to demonstrate self-sufficiency in all areas, including rigging, boat handling drills, racing basics and outside of class preparation. Students will learn the highest levels of racing knowledge, including advanced racing tactics, rig tuning and rules. All students must have attended our Academy class (formerly Intermediate class) until they demonstrate the necessary skill in their intended racing fleet. These will also be divided by our Bic Team, our 420 Team, and our Laser Team. This registration will designate fleet of preference for regattas as well as our weekly fleet racing (Tuesday nights for Lasers, and our NEW Thursday night 420 fleet racing). Racing Team students will be eligible to compete in our traveling regattas, and they will be expected to participate to the best of their ability in our evening, Club-sponsored fleet racing. Racing team members must bring their gear to every class. This should include all items recommended for our Academy level. Students must also bring or buy a lunch for every full day of racing.

Students may be registered for both the Academy level and the Racing Team, so long as they are registered for two different fleets. For instance, a student may be registered to compete in our 420 racing team, but also be learning how to race a Laser Radial more competently in our Academy class
