USCG Captain's Classes
What can a Captain’s License do for me?
If you are an experienced boater with a well-equipped boat in good condition, why not share your passion with passengers willing to pay for a great experience on the water. A Captain’s License is required to legally carry passengers for hire. This includes fishing charters, sightseeing, diving, water taxi, sailing instruction or anytime that you have passengers for hire.
If you have a boat and you’re already taking friends out every weekend, you could get licensed as a professional Captain and turn your passion into cash. Maybe yacht delivery is for you?
Many insurance companies now require a Captain’s License for deliveries from port to port. If an unlicensed driver gets into a collision, the insurance may not cover the damages. In class, you'll learn the many ways to turn your love for boating into money in the bank.
Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels - Cost: $795.00
Charter Captain's License for up to six passengers or less
This Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license and is commonly referred to as the “6-pack” or “Charterboat Captain’s License”. This license allows you take 6 passengers for-hire, plus crew, on your boat.
The course is designed for Captains working and boating on all federal waters with passengers for hire on a power-driven boat. This includes duck hunters, sunset tours, fishing charters, sailing instruction and similar activities.

Masters Upgrade 100 Ton Captains License - Cost $385
Tour Boat Captain's License for more than six passengers
Do you want to upgrade your OUPV license to 100 Ton Masters License? A Master’s License is the highest-level license and is required if you operate inspected vessels. Inspected vessels can carry more than 6 passengers. For a passenger boat to become inspected, the vessel must be built in accordance with rigid USCG Commercial Vessel Inspection standards. This license allows you to operate both inspected vessels (such as inland ferry boats, harbor tours boats, water taxi or dive boat) and uninspected vessels (less than six passengers).
Add this course onto your OUPV license for the opportunity to work on tour boats. You can sign up for but you must complete the OUPV class before upgrading to this license.
